On connait Compay Segundo comme le vieillard sympathique de Buena Vista Social Club, révélé au grand public après une reconnaissance tardive. Mais dans les années 40, Francisco Repilado était un fringant jeune homme et formait avec Lorenzo Hierrezuelo (Compay Primo) le Dúo Los Compadres, l'une des plus brillantes formations de son qui ait existé. "Mi Son Oriental" fait partie des titres que le duo compose et enregistre entre 1942 et 1955, parmi de nombreux succès devenus depuis des classiques de la musique cubaine.
Le texte revient sur les événements de la Guerre d'Indépendance cubaine (1895-98) où des héros de l'armée libératrice comme Antonio Maceo (El Titán) soutenus par les paysans cubains obtiennent l'indépendance vis-à-vis de l'Espagne. Les paysans (guajiros) qui payèrent un très lourd tribut durant cette guerre sont à l'honneur dans ce texte qui célèbre leurs ruses et signaux pour déjouer l'ennemi.
